Aveda Prom

Emergency photoshoot.
A couple frantic calls one night had me in a cab and rushing to shoot this though a friend of mine who works for Aveda.
To say this all came together as it happened would be a bit of an understatement, however All things considered I’m quite happy with it. — It’s good to stay out of your comfort zone sometimes.
no plans, no studio, no light, no prep, just GO.

It pushes you, makes you think on your feet.

This is looser edit.
I’d edit tighter for presentation, but eff, whats a blog good for if you don’t put a lot of things on it?

Assistants

The lovely hired help!
There are always silly, or banal photos of assistants from every job. So I decided to post a few of the wonderful Kira and Rico.

Dr. Yang

It’s not everyday you get to photograph a brain surgeon

Dr. Yang, a researcher at Ryerson University is a pretty amazing guy. When he’s not inside peoples heads, he works with lasers and imagery, building new technology. Pretty impressive guy.

I shot this for the Ryerson University Magazine (alumni mag). One of the best pieces of advice about photography I ever came across was about how when you work within restrictions, it brings out the best in you. The lab we shot in was tight and filled with stuff. I normally prefer to the “less is more, lots of white space” kind of thing, but I was in a position where I had to use what I had, so I decided a nice low-key, spotlight look would use the space as best as possible and make my impressive subject look, umm impressive! The result worked out really well, so much so that I got a really nice hand written letter from my editor thanking me for the work.
Which, I must say, really made my day.

Thanks Colleen!

PS The wavy colour overlaying the photograph is actually a new form of imaging he developed that is “more exact than ultrasound, more economical than MRI and safer than X-rays.”

Magenta: Flash Forward Boston

Thanks to the lovely Magenta Foundation,
I had work from my series “Beacons” installed in Boston as part of the Flash Forward Festival there. It should be up all summer long too, which is quite exciting! There’s nothing quite like having one’s work right beside the OCEAN :)

my boys and I! Boston rollin’

and… here is a video of the festivals director MaryAnn speaking about the festival, (my work is in there too: at 1:56.)
